Professor Zheng Cheng, former dean of the School of Animal Sciences, South China Agricultural University, has been engaged in feed research for many years. He is concerned about the healthy development of feed industry and pays attention to the future trend of feed industry. In this paper, some problems in the development of feed industry in Guangdong are discussed.

I. Review of the Development of Feed Industry in Guangdong

When did Guangdong feed industry start? Who was the first feed processing enterprise? Why did Guangdong feed industry lead the whole country?

Historical trace

In some authoritative articles, the development process of China's feed industry is divided into three stages: the start-up stage (1978-1984), the rapid development stage (1985-2000), and the integration and upgrading stage (2000-now). This division conforms to the general situation of feed industry development after China's reform and opening up. When does the history of a country's feed industry begin? The United States feed industry has a history of more than 100 years. It started with the establishment of the first feed processing plant in 1875. The 100th anniversary of the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) was founded in 1909 by its predecessor, the American Feed Supervisors Association (AAFCO). According to this algorithm, the history of Guangdong feed industry should be traced back to 1978. According to the meeting and information records of the oldest ancestors working in feed industry in Guangdong Province, at the beginning of 1964, the government of Jungqi Town in Shunde County changed the name of "Rongqi Powder Factory" to "Rongqi Town Flour Feed Processing Factory" (abbreviated as "Rongqi Feed Factory", the predecessor of Guangdong Guanhua Feed Industry Company), which is also the first feed processing enterprise in Guangdong Province. From 1964 to 1975, the annual output of powdered mixed feed was 300 t to 500 t, all of which were exported to Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. After 1975, 2000 tons of imported maize were supplied by China National Native Products and Animal Products Import and Export Corporation. The factory began to produce powdered mixed feed with an annual output of 3000 t, all of which were export earning foreign exchange products. It can be seen that the feed industry in Guangdong started in 1964 and has a history of 46 years since 2010.

Lead the country

With the reform and opening-up in 1978, Guangdong took advantage of the strong easterly wind of reform and opening-up, and a situation of grains, food, animal husbandry, agricultural machinery, agricultural reclamation and other systems rushing to run feed emerged. Large and small feed processing enterprises sprang up like mushrooms in southern Guangdong. From 1978 to 1990, most feed enterprises of a certain scale in Guangdong have been built and put into operation in the past ten years. For example, in 1982, Shunde Rongqi Feed Factory introduced CPM granulator, which produced 2 tons per hour, and became the first enterprise in Guangdong to mass produce pellet formula feed; Shenzhen Zhengda Kangding Co., Ltd., the first joint venture feed enterprise in China, was formally established in 1979 and put into operation in 1982, which was the largest feed factory in the country at that time with an annual output of 180,000 tons; from 1979 to 1985, it was established and built. Jiujiang Feed Factory, Huaxing Feed Factory, Guangdong Zhengda Kangdi Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Huabao Feed Factory, etc. were put into production; feed enterprises built and put into production from 1985 to 1990 included Xinhui New Grain Feed Factory, Guangzhou Baiyun Feed Factory, Zhongshan Taishan Feed Factory, Guangshun Feed Factory, Shenzhen Xinguang Feed Factory, Shantou Chenghai Feed Factory, Guangzhou Suiping Feed Factory, etc.

In the 1980s, Guangdong's feed industry took the lead in the whole country, mainly in the following four aspects: First, it developed rapidly and on a large scale. In 1991, the total output of formula feed and mixed feed reached 4.0775 million tons, which was far ahead of other provinces. Second, the production equipment was advanced. Most of the feed factories built and put into operation in the 1980s have imported foreign advanced complete sets of equipment; the third is that feed additives were first introduced and used; the fourth is that the quality of products is good and the credibility is high. Guangdong feed products are sold to other provinces, customers are thumbs up.

Since 1991, Guangdong Wenshi Food Group, Hengxing Group, Haida Group, Wangda Group, Nanbao Group and other large enterprises have emerged successively as pillars of Guangdong feed industry, with large output, greatly accelerating the progress of Guangdong feed industry. The comprehensive development of concentrated feed, premix and various additives enterprises has made the products more complete, and the overall level of Guangdong feed industry has been further improved. In 2009, China's feed output reached 17.5 million tons, ranking first in the country for seven consecutive years.

Reasons for rising

China's feed industry has developed rapidly and achieved tremendous success. The fundamental reason is that there are policies of reform and opening up and market economy environment, relevant national development outlines and policies, regulations and guidelines, and the correct leadership and support of relevant state departments. These are well known and deeply appreciated. As for why Guangdong feed industry can lead the whole country? It has the following advantages:

First, Guangdong's social economy is relatively developed, and the animal husbandry and aquaculture industry started earlier. Before liberation, pigs, poultry and pond fish exported to Hong Kong and Macao. Following the birth of New China, the food companies of the People's Government encouraged farmers to raise pigs, poultry and pond fish and purchase fresh products for the Hong Kong and Macao markets. After the reform and opening up, the domestic and foreign exports of livestock and poultry aquatic products have increased greatly, and it is profitable to engage in animal husbandry and aquatic industry, which greatly stimulates the enthusiasm of farmers. With the rapid development of commodity animal husbandry and aquatic industry, there is an urgent need for commodity feed, so the feed industry goes up with the trend. It can be seen that market demand is the primary factor determining the development of an industry.

Secondly, Guangdong is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao. It has early foreign exchanges. After the reform and opening up, it enjoys the preferential policies of "special economic zones" and "one step first", and is better than other provinces in introducing foreign capital, technology, equipment and products. One or two examples are given in the feed industry: as early as the 1960s and 1970s, the Chicken Friends Society of Hong Kong came to Guangdong many times to introduce the situation of chicken raising in Hong Kong.
